The single most devastating event that
can affect a shipping company is for it to experience an emergency
situation related to one of its vessels.
Responding to the Emergency quickly, as
well as successfully, requires an efficient and effective procedure, and
personnel that have knowledge of and are trained in its use.
All shipboard crews are trained and
drilled extensively in reacting to onboard emergency scenarios, however,
many companies do not apply the same criterion to the state of readiness
of its management office personnel. Often a small group of the office
workforce is allocated membership of the Response Team, which drills and
responds to the ship’s scheduled drills while the majority of staff are
not involved.
When a real crisis occurs it is often
found that some of the Response Team is not available, and those that
are present are frequently sent to the vessel that requires assistance.
Absence of trained and emergency aware
personnel can dilute the overall strength of the Response Team that is
needed to support the ship throughout the Emergency.
Experience has shown that a short
training session for all office staff can improve the overall Emergency
Response process by:
- Highlighting the
importance of Emergency Response
- Making all staff
aware of terms and terminology
- Ensuring staff know
what and where relevant information is available
- Having staff from
different departments working together
- Ensuring a supply
of back-up personnel are available
