International Safety Management Code - Maintenance 

Many ship operators have implemented a comprehensive Safety Management System that covers what they do and fully complies with the ISM Code. Their problems then begin. The maintenance of their SMS can require constant attention, up-grading manuals and procedures, ensuring the yearly audit plan is followed and making certain the regular process of reviews and meetings are held and attended.

In most cases the smaller ship operator does not have the resources of the large ship management companies to complete this administration. The operator of a few vessels may not have a budget for a full time person to run the Safety Management System.
