International Safety Management Code - Implementation

All ships and ship operators require, for statutory or commercial reasons, ISM Code accreditation. Ships need to possess a Safety Management Certificate (SMC) and Companies will only be allowed to operate if they have a Document of Compliance (DOC) for the specific types of ships they manage.

The basic requirements for accreditation with the ISM Code are that the flag state of the vessel verifies that the company and ship have good work practices covering the requirements of SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW and ILO. The necessity of the ISM Code is for these good work practices to be recorded and carried out by all competent personnel. The verification process is usually carried out by a classification society on behalf of the flag state.

KNIGHTSMART LIMITED has experience of implementing ISM into large and small shipping companies of many nationalities and it has found the average time required to provide a reliable and working implementation is about six months, which includes the three months records required by the accreditation organisation. KNIGHTSMART will ensure implementation in this timescale by providing a comprehensive service that covers:

  • Safety management strategy – outlining the way the company will approach ISM

  • Manual integration – identifying how existing company manuals can be included in the Safety Management System

  • Manual production – identifying the critical areas that must be covered by process or procedure and the areas that provide value to the shipboard and office personnel

  • Document control – establishing a process that allows all required manuals, ship’s information, forms etc to be kept up-to-date and relevant

In addition to supplying these tangible services, KNIGHTSMART LIMITED  will also provide extended backup of advice, training and encouragement to ensure that during the implementation period the regular and routine work is carried out effectively and efficiently. This advice and assistance will be evidenced by visits to the operator's office and ship, telephone hotline and e-mail.

KNIGHTSMART LIMITED  can provide help with your company’s ISM requirements as ship owners or as associated organisations within the shipping industry. It is a cost effective way of installing a company’s safety management system.
