Safety Management Code - Implementation All ships and ship operators require, for statutory or commercial reasons, ISM Code accreditation. Ships need to possess a Safety Management Certificate (SMC) and Companies will only be allowed to operate if they have a Document of Compliance (DOC) for the specific types of ships they manage. The basic requirements for accreditation with the ISM Code are that the flag state of the vessel verifies that the company and ship have good work practices covering the requirements of SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW and ILO. The necessity of the ISM Code is for these good work practices to be recorded and carried out by all competent personnel. The verification process is usually carried out by a classification society on behalf of the flag state.
